Learning Japanese

 投稿者:Chris  投稿日:1970年 1月 1日(木)09時00分0秒
I should probably say that I've had two years actual lessons in japanese
and been studying on my own off and on for another three years since then.
Lately I've been doing a close analysis of the songs on the video girl ai
soundtrack so that listening to my CD will in and of itself be practice of
japanese. I've also been reading Magical Knights Rayearth but at half an
hour to the page it's been a long time and I still haven't finished volume
one. Ah well. My verbal japanese should be improving though since I have
a long commute now and listen to various learn-japanese-in-your-car tapes.
Once I get a CD player in my car I'll probably listen to JPop instead.
In any case I'm thinking that after I finish volume one of magical knights
rayearth I should probably read Kimagure Orange Road or Koko wa Greenwoodo
(if there's a manga version of that story) or at any rate something with
a lot more 'normal' dialogue so that I'm not always looking up words for
magical creatures and things. Not really a question or advice just some
thoughts for people to respond to if they like.

Japanese from Netscape Navigator

 投稿者:Chris  投稿日:1970年 1月 1日(木)09時00分0秒
Well perhaps I should have been clearer. I'm using English Win98 with
Netscape Communicator 4.5. I installed the japanese fonts from the Internet
Explorer 3.1 japanese extensions so now I can read japanese. If I can type
in japanese I don't know what the keystrokes are but I suspect from the
explanation at netscape's help for international users that I need to either
have a japanese version of windows or buy a third-party product that gives
a japanese text entry mode to windows. Well when I get my new hard drive
I'm going to install japanese extensions for linux on my home machine and
then I won't have to worry about it. I probably shouldn't be posting from
work in any case.
I have however in the meantime cut-and-pasted the characters from various
webpages and can now spell things out by cutting and pasting more. It's not
ideal but at least I can sign my name 'properly' now. :) (I think. It doesn't
look right in the edit window... we'll see.)

entering Japanese from Netscape

 投稿者:Netchan  投稿日:1970年 1月 1日(木)09時00分0秒
Hi Chris. If you are using Macintosh with Japanese Language Kit
or Windows 95 Japanese version simply choose preferences
from Edit menu. Open 'Navigator' in the Category
Highlight 'Languages' and add Japanese at the top of the list.
Then open 'Appearance' in the Category and highlight 'fonts'
select Japanese for the encoding.
If you use Windows 98 English version you can read and write
Japanese with your Netscape too.
Please tell me if it does not work.

Hello?

  Hello anyone out there?
And while I'm at it - anyone have an idea how to enter japanese text
into these boxes from Netscape Communicator? That might be helpful for
discussing Japanese language questions.
